The Key To Having It All

I often get asked by other moms how I get the balance of parenting and being a CEO right. The core of it is shifting from “owning your job” to that of a business owner.

You simply cannot and should not do everything yourself.

Growing up in South Africa where there are beliefs in our culture of ‘making a plan’, doing it yourself and striving for a bargain – I had to unlearn those ideals.

They’re known as “limiting beliefs” and get ingrained in our psyche from a young age.

I see successful business owners (by that I mean you don’t have debt, you’re making a good profit and have money in the bank) half killing yourselves slaving away, working crazy hours and not allowing yourselves the support that you deserve!

YOU do deserve it because YOU took a risk by starting a business (most fail within the first three years).

YOU deserve it because YOU invested cash in an idea.

YOU get to reap the rewards if YOU give yourself permission to do so.

Stop being so hard on yourself! Live a little. Enjoy this crazy ride.

Map out your ideal day on a calendar. Begin to track how you spend your time so that you can start moving closer to that perfect day.

Start training yourself to spot tasks that other people could be doing. My days include being present and getting my daughter ready for school. Yoga or horse riding for exercise. Team briefing via Skype and via Basecamp. Marketing my businesses. Coaching clients. Overseeing what my team did for the day. Replying to emails. Every afternoon off with my little girl.

My support team looks like this:
• Full-time social media manager
• Part time copywriter/production manager
• Housekeeper 4-Days per week
• Bookkeeper / Accountant
• Web Developer (per job basis)

This is for my social media marketing business and my coaching business.

When I had my photography business in London, things shifted when I outsourced all of my RAW editing from our weddings. That freed up so much time so that I could submit our weddings for publication and it resulted in over 250 pages worth of tearsheets in glossy magazines! Had I spent my time editing images all week long I would never have achieved that amount of PR.

This principle can work for any business.

Hugely successful people guard their time, wake up early, read books, meditate and journal.
